NEW YORK — Nintendo has announced a record-breaking launch for its latest gaming console, the Switch 2, having sold over 3.5 million units within the first four days of release. This achievement marks the highest global sales level for the company’s hardware in such a short period.

The Switch 2 made its debut on June 5, and eager fans of its eight-year-old predecessor were finally rewarded after a long wait for an upgrade. Enthusiastic gamers formed long lines at retailers around the globe as they awaited the console. The fervor followed a frenzied pre-order phase that sold out rapidly.

Nintendo is relying on the Switch 2 to revitalize its declining sales numbers. The console’s appeal is fueled by several new features, including a larger screen and a suite of new games. It also incorporates innovative social features designed to attract more players to its online gaming ecosystem.

For the fiscal year ending in March 2026, Nintendo projects sales of 15 million Switch 2 consoles. The impressive initial figures include both the popular Nintendo Switch 2’s Mario Kart World Bundle and the Japanese-language and multi-language systems released in Japan.

The Switch 2 comes with a base price of $449.99, a notable increase from the original Switch’s $299. This price hike is attributed to the added new features, although analysts suggest that tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump have also influenced the cost. These import taxes played a part in delaying the console’s preorders, originally slated for April, by several weeks.
