MONTREAL — Lance Stroll is set to compete in the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend following his absence from the Spanish GP due to ongoing issues with hand and wrist pain, according to an announcement made by the Formula 1 team Aston Martin on Wednesday.
The Montreal native expressed his enthusiasm in a statement published by his team, stating, “I am thrilled to be back in the driver’s seat for my home Grand Prix this weekend. Racing in front of the Montreal crowd was always my ultimate goal, and I worked tirelessly to make it happen.”
Aston Martin revealed that Stroll recently underwent a “successful medical procedure” aimed at alleviating his symptoms. The team added that he has been preparing by completing several laps in an older F1 car in France.
“I feel invigorated following my procedure and have been at Paul Ricard getting some laps under my belt to ready myself,” said the 26-year-old Stroll.
While the team did not specify whether the left or right hand was causing discomfort, it had previously mentioned that Stroll had been dealing with the pain for six weeks. This issue was thought to be linked to a medical procedure he underwent earlier in 2023, which addressed fractures and a broken toe resulting from a cycling accident.
To date this season, Stroll has accumulated 14 points. His teammate, Fernando Alonso, has been facing challenges, having scored just 2 points.
Due to the fact that Stroll had already qualified for the Spanish Grand Prix, Aston Martin was not permitted to substitute another driver in his stead.
