In Leverkusen, Germany, Bayer Leverkusen has bolstered its ranks by signing Axel Tape, a promising young defender, from Paris Saint-Germain’s under-19 squad. The 17-year-old Tape comes on a free transfer and has agreed to a “long-term” contract with the Bundesliga club.
Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, had high praise for Tape, describing him as a versatile defensive player with good ball skills, speed, athleticism, and an advanced understanding of the game. Rolfes highlighted Tape’s potential, noting that acquiring him without a transfer fee is a strategic part of their future plans.
Having recently assisted PSG’s under-19 team to secure the French championship, Tape made three appearances for their senior team. There were also reports linking him to interest from Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur.
Tape’s signing marks the second major acquisition by Leverkusen in this transfer window, following the addition of 19-year-old Ibrahim Maza from Hertha Berlin. This is amid significant changes at the club, triggered by former coach Xabi Alonso’s move to Real Madrid. Team captain Johnathan Tah departed for rival Bayern Munich, while wing-back Jeremie Frimpong has joined Liverpool.
In the latest developments, star player Florian Wirtz is expected to finalize a monumental transfer to Liverpool soon, possibly setting a record. Meanwhile, the mantle of coach has been passed to former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag, who steps in to lead the team. The club has also welcomed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken, arriving from Brentford.
Further restructuring efforts include the acquisition of 21-year-old defender Tim Oermann from Bochum, who has been loaned to Austrian champions Sturm Graz. On the midfield front, Francis Onyeka has temporarily joined Bochum for the upcoming season, strengthening their collaborative squad-building efforts.
