MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Twins pitcher Danny Coulombe has returned to the active roster after recovering from an injury. The team announced Sunday that the relief pitcher was activated from the 15-day injured list following the successful conclusion of his rehabilitation efforts.
The 35-year-old left-handed pitcher demonstrated his readiness by throwing a scoreless inning for the Triple-A St. Paul team during their recent game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Coulombe had been sidelined since May 18 due to a strain in his left forearm muscle, but prior to his injury, he put together an impressive record.
In the 19 appearances he made before his injury, Coulombe managed 16 2/3 scoreless innings. During that time, he allowed only eight hits and two walks while recording 19 strikeouts. His performance had been pivotal, holding opposing hitters to a minuscule .138 batting average before his placement on the injured list.
To accommodate Coulombe’s reinstatement, the Twins made a corresponding move by placing right-handed pitcher Zebby Matthews on the 15-day injured list. Matthews is dealing with a strain in his right shoulder. Throughout the season, Matthews has participated in four starts, earning a 1-1 record with a 5.21 ERA, while issuing eight walks and striking out 25 batters.
As the Twins continue their season, Coulombe’s return is anticipated to provide a boost to their bullpen, which will benefit from the left-hander’s experience and previous success on the mound.
