PARIS — Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini achieved a milestone by clinching their maiden French Open women’s doubles title. The Italian duo, who were seeded second in the tournament, emerged victorious over Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic with scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 on Sunday.
This triumph marks Errani’s second doubles title at the French Open and her sixth Grand Slam victory overall. At 38 years old, Errani had a remarkable partnership with Roberta Vinci, with whom she secured titles at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open in earlier years.
Reflecting on the win, Errani expressed, “In tennis, it’s a continuous journey, and maintaining focus daily is crucial. It’s easy to overlook the magnitude of these moments until you stop and realize how monumental winning a Grand Slam truly is.” Such sentiments capture the significance of this achievement for Errani.
The last time Italian players won the women’s doubles at Roland Garros was when Errani and Vinci took home the trophy in 2012. Furthermore, this year proved to be particularly successful for Errani as she also claimed the mixed doubles title alongside Andrea Vavassori, solidifying her status in the tennis world.
Paolini, recognized for her prowess in singles, nearly captured the clay-court Grand Slam title last year but fell to Iga Swiatek in the final. During the victory ceremony, Paolini praised her partner, saying, “You’ve always been an inspiration to me. It’s an honor to share these moments with you; you truly are a legend in my eyes.”
This victory not only adds another chapter to their careers but also underscores the dynamic partnership between Errani and Paolini, who continue to leave a mark in the world of tennis.
