PITTSBURGH — During a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, Pirates’ pitcher Andrew Heaney had to exit in the seventh inning due to cramping in his left calf.
Heaney’s departure took place following a wild pitch that reached the backstop. This prompted an immediate visit from an athletic trainer. Despite attempting three warmup throws, Heaney ultimately decided to head back to the dugout.
Rookie pitcher Isaac Mattson came in as the reliever with the score tied 1-1, a runner on third base, and no outs. Mattson successfully retired the next three batters, preventing the runner from scoring and securing his first major league win. This victory was solidified after Henry Davis hit a decisive home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading the Pirates to a 2-1 victory.
Andrew Heaney delivered a solid performance before his exit, allowing a run from Kyle Schwarber’s first-inning homer and four hits over more than six innings. He accomplished five strikeouts and issued no walks. Heaney currently holds a season record of 3-4 with an ERA of 3.24 over 13 starts.
