SAN FRANCISCO — The San Diego Padres emerged victorious over the San Francisco Giants with a 3-2 win on Tuesday night, after a thrilling extra-inning battle. Manny Machado was instrumental for the Padres, delivering four hits, including a decisive two-run single in the ninth inning that leveled the score. Jake Cronenworth then drove in the decisive run in the 10th inning, allowing San Diego to secure the win.
The Padres, coming off a narrow 1-0 victory in the series opener that also extended into extra innings, found themselves in familiar territory. Giants’ closer Camilo Doval, in a moment of vulnerability, loaded the bases by walking both Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez with two outs, paving the way for Machado’s pivotal performance at bat as he went 4 for 4.
In the 10th inning, Spencer Bivens managed to get the first two outs, but Cronenworth executed a crucial grounder that eluded Giants’ first baseman Casey Schmitt, allowing the automatic runner, Jackson Merrill, to sprint home from third base. Yuki Matsui effectively handled the ninth inning without incident, while Jeremiah Estrada closed the game with three swift outs for his second save. Notably, Estrada managed to quell the Giants’ threat, retiring Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee with grounders to shortstop.
Ramos, nevertheless, provided the Giants with a fleeting moment of glory through his 11th homer of the season, a two-run blast in the third inning. However, his efforts fell short for San Francisco, which continues to struggle offensively, having scored four or fewer runs in 16 straight games. This marks their second lengthiest streak of offensive challenges since the team’s relocation to San Francisco in 1958.
San Francisco’s starting pitcher, Landen Roupp, delivered a commendable performance with six and one-third shutout innings, allowing four hits. Meanwhile, Padres rookie Ryan Bergert, who was promoted from Triple-A El Paso before the game, made his major league debut, conceding two runs and six hits over five innings.
A notable moment occurred in the eighth inning when the Padres’ initial two batters reached base. Giants third baseman Matt Chapman showcased his defensive prowess by expertly handling Merrill’s grounder, executing a double play that briefly stalled the Padres’ momentum.
The stats underscored the competitive nature of the game: before the ninth inning, Doval had maintained a flawless streak, not allowing any runs over 20 and two-thirds innings—the longest active streak in the major leagues at the time.
Next up, the Padres are set to have RHP Nick Pivetta (6-2, 2.74 ERA) face off against Giants LHP Kyle Harrison (1-1, 2.51 ERA) in Wednesday’s scheduled matchup.
