MILAN — Simone Inzaghi’s tenure as head coach of Inter Milan concluded with the team’s 5-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. This match marked the end of Inzaghi’s four-year journey with Inter, during which he expressed deep commitment and dedication to the club.

In a heartfelt letter to Inter Milan supporters on the club’s official website, Inzaghi announced his departure, reflecting on his time with the team. The defeat against PSG was not just a loss, but the most significant setback in the nearly seven-decade history of European finals.

As Inzaghi exits Inter, rumors have surfaced regarding potential new opportunities. Reports suggest that Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal is prepared to offer him a lucrative contract, potentially exceeding 20 million euros (or $23 million) annually.

Throughout his leadership, Inzaghi achieved notable success, including securing a Serie A title for Inter Milan last year. His leadership was also pivotal when Inter faced Manchester City in the 2023 Champions League final, although they were unable to claim the title.

Having served the club for precisely four years, Inzaghi was still under contract for another season. With his departure, the future leadership for Inter Milan remains uncertain, particularly as they prepare for the Club World Cup in the United States beginning June 14. Their opening match is set against Monterrey on June 17, shortly before Al-Hilal competes against Real Madrid.

Speculation is rife that Inter might pursue Cesc Fabregas, who led Como to a respectable 10th place in Serie A, as a potential candidate for the coaching role.

Inter Milan concluded the recent league season in second place, trailing just one point behind Napoli, the champions. There was potential for a treble, but the team’s ambitions were dashed after losing to AC Milan in the Italian Cup semifinals in April and suffering defeat in the Italian Super Cup final earlier in January.

In addition to Inter Milan, several other prominent Italian teams, such as Milan, Roma, and Atalanta, are also in the midst of managerial transitions following the offseason decisions, marking a widespread reshuffle among Italy’s top clubs.
