MADRID — Atletico Madrid has announced a two-year contract extension for Antoine Griezmann, ensuring that the French forward could remain with the club until age 36. Griezmann’s previous contract was set to expire next year.

During the past season, Griezmann showcased his striking abilities by netting 19 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions, contributing to Atletico Madrid’s third-place finish in La Liga and their journey to the Copa del Rey semifinals. With 197 goals, Griezmann holds the title of Atletico’s all-time leading scorer.

Expressing his excitement about the extension, Griezmann shared on Instagram, “Very happy to keep wearing this amazing jersey for many more years. I hope to bring you a lot of joy.”

This announcement puts to rest rumors suggesting Griezmann might be contemplating a move to Major League Soccer. It comes as Atletico Madrid gears up for their participation in the Club World Cup set to take place in the United States.

Atletico’s first match in the tournament will be against UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain on June 15 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. They will face additional challenges from the Seattle Sounders and Brazil’s Botafogo as the group stage progresses.
