SYDNEY — The Matildas, Australia’s women’s national soccer team, have appointed Joe Montemurro as their full-time coach, a significant development confirmed on Monday. This appointment comes after Tony Gustavsson’s contract came to an end following the Paris Olympics last year. During this transition period, Tom Sermanni handled the coaching responsibilities on an interim basis.
Just hours following the announcement of Montemurro’s new role, the team showcased their prowess in a friendly match against Argentina, securing a decisive 4-1 victory. This match marked Sermanni’s final appearance as the interim manager.
Montemurro, an Australian native, began his coaching career in Melbourne and has gone on to achieve significant success in Europe. Prior to joining the French club Lyon last year, he had a fruitful spell with Juventus, where he secured five trophies. His impressive achievements with Arsenal included winning the 2018 FA Women’s League Cup and the Women’s Super League in 2019.
Signing a three-year contract with Football Australia, Montemurro’s tenure will encompass significant milestones such as the Asian Cup next year, the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Heather Garriock, the chief executive of Football Australia, praised Montemurro’s world-class experience and his deep understanding of the Australian football landscape. “Joe brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football,” she stated, highlighting his extensive experience in coaching high-level women’s soccer in Europe.
Montemurro will officially assume his role on June 16, in preparation for the June-July FIFA international window. Expressing his gratitude, he described the role as the “honor of a lifetime.”
“This team holds immense significance for so many Australians, and I am humbled by the chance to shape its next chapter,” Montemurro expressed. He aims to capitalize on the emerging talent within the team and the upcoming major tournaments. “My job is to honor the legacy, harness the momentum, and help this team play football that inspires and unites.”
