CHICAGO — Cincinnati Reds standout Elly De La Cruz approached Sunday’s game with a profound sense of loss, driven by the passing of his beloved sister, Genelis. Despite the personal tragedy, De La Cruz chose to participate in the game against the Chicago Cubs, illustrating his dedication and resilience on the field.
During the contest, De La Cruz showcased his talents with a two-run home run and scored two runs overall, although the Reds ultimately fell to the Cubs with a 7-3 defeat. Reds manager Terry Francona acknowledged the young player’s determination to conclude the weekend series, emphasizing the team’s unanimous support for his decision.
“He takes immense pride in being available for the team,” Francona remarked. “His dedication is reminiscent of Carlos Santana during his time in Cleveland—admirable qualities, especially in someone so young.”
Reports from Z101 Digital in the Dominican Republic revealed that Genelis succumbed to long-standing health issues on Saturday. Choosing to process his grief privately, De La Cruz refrained from speaking to the media, and the Reds respected his desire to withhold further details regarding the circumstances of his sister’s passing.
“We often obsess over the competitiveness of the game and the pursuit of victory, but moments like these starkly remind us of life’s true priorities,” Francona commented, emphasizing the team’s care for De La Cruz during this difficult time.
Throughout the game, De La Cruz demonstrated grit, starting with a single in the first inning followed by a flyout in the fourth. His performance peaked in the sixth inning with his 12th home run of the season. Additionally, he walked in the ninth inning and later scored on Tyler Stephenson’s sacrifice fly.
His landmark 50th career home run was a majestic shot down the right-field line, covering an estimated distance of 423 feet with an impressive exit velocity of 117.4 mph. As De La Cruz completed his run to home plate, he poignantly tapped his chest, pointed skyward, and clapped in memory of his sister. Upon reaching home, he formed a heart with his hands—a tribute from the heart to honor his beloved Genelis.
