L.A. County Shooting: Officer Killed, Another Hurt, 1 Dead

    BALDWIN PARK, Calif. — A weekend incident in a city east of Los Angeles resulted in tragic outcomes as an officer was killed and another suffered injuries after responding to reports of gunfire, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

    The officers were responding to a situation on Saturday night where a man was reportedly firing shots with a rifle, and another person was found lying on the sidewalk, wounded and unresponsive.

    Upon arrival, the officers were fired upon, and one of them managed to return fire, according to Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna. The confrontation led to an adult male suspect being wounded and subsequently apprehended. While the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed, he was transported to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

    The officer who lost his life in the line of duty was named Samuel Riveros. Meanwhile, the wounded individual found on the sidewalk succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital. The identity of this victim is yet to be released as next of kin notifications are pending, stated the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

    Following the harrowing event, a press conference was held by Luna and Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert López.

    Chief López shared heartfelt sentiments, describing the fallen officer as an “amazing man” who had a passion for snowboarding and enjoyed traveling across the United States to attend Dodger games. The injured officer is currently recovering in good condition, surrounded by family.

    López expressed the deep sorrow over the loss, calling it “extremely tragic to have to deal with this” event.

    Although the exact number of shots fired is undetermined, investigators have recovered the firearm used in the incident. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation, classifying it as a double homicide.
