In a surprising development, seasoned central defender Francesco Acerbi has opted out of joining Italy’s national team, raising concerns for the Azzurri as they gear up for a pivotal World Cup qualification match against Norway. Acerbi was initially seen as a key player to counter the formidable Erling Haaland.
Italy’s head coach, Luciano Spalletti, shared that Acerbi reached out to him following his appearance in the Champions League final where his club, Inter Milan, faced a decisive defeat, losing 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain. Spalletti recounted, “Acerbi sent me a message explaining that he won’t be participating and I got back to him. We also discussed it over the phone. There are other talented players who are equally deserving of a spot in the team.”
Acerbi expressed his discontent through Instagram, feeling sidelined and undervalued. “I have no desire to remain where I’m not genuinely appreciated. It’s evident that I’m not a part of the coach’s current plans,” Acerbi stated.
The Italian squad is set to face Norway on Friday, followed by a home match against Moldova three days later. The outcome in Norway is crucial and heavily influences Italy’s chances of making it to the World Cup, a sentiment echoed by Spalletti, who said, “Our World Cup aspirations hinge significantly on our performance in Norway. We are all aware of its importance.”
Italy, a notable absence from the previous two World Cup tournaments, hopes to alter its luck with these crucial matches. However, setbacks continue as Alessandro Buongiorno, another defender, was also sidelined due to injury. In response, Luca Ranieri from Fiorentina has been called up to fill the gap left by Buongiorno.
