LOS ANGELES — Roman Martin demonstrated his prowess at the plate, launching a grand slam during UCLA’s explosive seven-run second inning, leading the high-scoring Bruins to an 11-5 victory over Arizona State. This triumph on Saturday night secures UCLA’s spot in the championship round of the Los Angeles Regional.
Demonstrating their offensive power, the Bruins added two more runs in the third inning. Dean West’s double to right-center field brought home one runner, followed by Roch Cholowsky’s single up the middle, delivering another run as West crossed the plate. UCLA extended their lead with additional single runs scored in both the fifth and eighth innings.
After their emphatic 19-4 win against Fresno State on Friday, the Bruins continued their strong performance, amassing 11 runs on 12 hits. Notably, Payton Brennan contributed significantly with three hits. As they look ahead, UCLA awaits the outcome of Sunday’s elimination game between Arizona State and UC Irvine. The winner of that contest will face UCLA later on Sunday, needing to achieve victories both that evening and the following Monday to clinch the regional title. For UCLA, a single win advances them forward.
On the Arizona State side, Brody Briggs managed to secure two RBIs, although their efforts were not enough to match UCLA’s dominance. Ian May (7-3) stepped in as relief pitcher, covering five innings and allowing three runs, with only two being earned, after starter Landon Stump. Conversely, Jack Martinez (6-4) faced challenges for Arizona State, conceding seven runs in just 1 2/3 innings.
Historically successful, UCLA boasts seven regional championships and claimed the College World Series title in 2013. Meanwhile, Arizona State’s storied legacy in college baseball includes 20 College World Series appearances and five national championships, with their last win dating back to 1981.
