TORONTO—In an impressive display, Charlotte FC triumphed over Toronto FC with a 2-0 victory on Saturday night, thanks to second-half goals from Pep Biel and Patrick Agyemang.
The victory marked a significant win for Charlotte FC, improving their record to 8-8-1. The team had been struggling recently, securing only their second win in the last eight matches. Conversely, Toronto FC endured another setback, adding to their challenging season, with a record now standing at 3-10-4, having suffered five losses in May alone.
The game saw an early breakthrough during the 56th minute when Liel Abada made an incisive move inside the penalty area, drawing defenders towards him. This clever play allowed an unmarked Pep Biel to score with a simple tap-in, breaking the deadlock.
Patrick Agyemang bolstered Charlotte’s lead with his sixth goal of the season in the 90th minute, ensuring the team’s victory. Charlotte clearly dominated in attempts on goal, outshooting Toronto 18-7, with shots on target standing at 9-2 in their favor.
Notably, David Bingham, who made his first league start since October 2023, stood in as goalkeeper for Charlotte. The change was necessitated by Kristijan Kahlina’s absence from the match. Kahlina had been recognized as the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year previously.
The win was particularly significant for Charlotte, given their previous road challenges, arriving with a 1-6-1 away record. Toronto FC’s struggles at home were evident, as they maintain a 1-6-2 record, ranking them 29th in the league. Their only home victory was a 2-0 success against D.C. United back on May 10.
