NEW YORK (Juan Soto made a triumphant return to power, hitting his first home run in over three weeks as the New York Mets triumphed 8-2 over the Colorado Rockies on a lively Saturday game. The Rockies, already struggling this season, continued their record-breaking skid, now standing with a dismal 9-49 record—the worst start in modern baseball history through 58 games. They are the first team ever to lose their opening 19 series of a season and have now dropped a major league record of 22 consecutive series stretching back to last September.

The Mets took an early lead in the game, largely due to Brett Baty’s impressive bases-clearing triple against Rockies pitcher Antonio Senzatela in a decisive four-run first inning. Tyrone Taylor punctuated this rally with an RBI single. During the fourth inning, the excitement continued as both Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto hit home runs on consecutive pitches.

Soto’s remarkable 404-foot homer, which marked his first since May 9, was met with enthusiastic chants of “JUAN SO-TO” from fans in the right-field seats. Acknowledging the warm reception, Soto turned toward the fans with raised arms in gratitude during the top of the fifth inning. Meanwhile, Jeff McNeil also contributed a homer in the eighth inning, further solidifying the Mets’ commanding lead.

On the mound, Kodai Senga delivered a stellar performance for the Mets, allowing just two runs on two hits over 6 2/3 innings. He impressively retired a career-high 17 consecutive batters between Ezequiel Tovar’s solo homer in the first and Tovar’s walk in the seventh. His night ended after Thairo Estrada drove him out with an RBI single.

Antonio Senzatela of the Rockies, who has now logged 10 losses this season, struggled considerably, conceding seven runs over four innings. This continued Colorado’s unfortunate trend, as they have not held a lead at the end of an inning since a week prior against the New York Yankees.

The series is set to conclude on Sunday with Mets right-hand pitcher Clay Holmes, holding a 5-3 record and a 2.98 ERA, facing off against Rockies left-hander Carson Palmquist, who is still seeking a win this season with a 0-3 record and an 8.78 ERA.
