MIAMI — The Miami Marlins edged out a 1-0 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, thanks to an impressive pitching performance by Edward Cabrera, who delivered 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Javier Sanoja’s crucial RBI single secured the win for the Marlins.
Robbie Ray, the starter for the Giants, was exceptional in his outing, retiring the last 15 batters over seven innings. Ray, whose season record now stands at 7-1, allowed just two hits, issued three walks and struck out nine. Despite his strong performance, he fell short of becoming the first pitcher with eight wins this season.
Cabrera, now 2-1 for the season, conceded six hits, issued three walks, and struck out five. The Marlins struggled to muster offense against the Giants, managing just three hits for the second consecutive game. However, Sanoja’s line drive to right field in the second inning, which brought home Dane Myers, was enough for the win.
Defensive plays were key in Miami’s victory. Myers contributed with a spectacular leaping catch that ended a Giants’ scoring threat in the seventh inning. With Heliot Ramos on first and two outs, Myers intercepted Jung Hoo Lee’s deep shot, preventing a potential scoring run. Miami’s defensive prowess continued in the fourth when left fielder Heriberto Hernández leaped at the wall to rob Tyler Fitzgerald of an extra-base hit.
Following Cabrera’s exit, Ronny Henriquez and Anthony Bender successfully handled the Giants’ lineup for the next seven outs, paving the way for Calvin Faucher to earn his fourth save of the season. Despite their efforts, the Giants left 11 runners on base and have now tallied 13 straight games with four or fewer runs.
A critical turning point in the match came when Henriquez entered the game and inherited two runners with two outs. His strikeout of Fitzgerald quashed the Giants’ sixth-inning threat and preserved the Marlins’ advantage.
Cabrera, who ended April with a 7.23 ERA, has been impressive in May, lowering his ERA to 4.14 after a series of strong performances.
In Sunday’s series finale, the Giants will start right-handed pitcher Hayden Birdsong, sporting a 2-1 record and 2.48 ERA, against the Marlins’ left-hander Ryan Weathers, who currently holds a 1-0 record with a 1.15 ERA.
