Jamie Overton will miss the rest of England’s one-day international and T20 series against the West Indies after suffering a broken finger in the first match of the ODI series on Thursday.
The fast-bowling all-rounder injured his right little finger while attempting to catch a return shot during England’s dominating 238-run win at Edgbaston. Despite the painful injury, Overton managed to finish his bowling spell, claiming impressive figures of 3-22.
After sustaining the injury, Overton immediately signaled discomfort and retreated to the dressing room for medical attention. Following some treatment, he returned to the field, but the damage was deemed significant enough to sideline him for the rest of the series.
In a statement released on Saturday, England Cricket announced that Overton will enter a rehabilitation period, overseen by the England medical team. Notably, England has opted not to bring in a replacement for Overton in the ODI squad.
The English team has a chance to secure its first ODI bilateral series victory since September 2023, with the second match taking place on Sunday in Cardiff, followed by the final match set for Tuesday at the Oval. The series will then transition to a three-match T20 format starting next Friday.
