SEATTLE — In an impressive display of determination, the Atlanta Dream secured their fourth consecutive victory by defeating the Seattle Storm 94-87. Spearheading the Dream’s efforts, Rhyne Howard achieved a personal season-high by scoring 33 points, while Allisha Gray set a career record with her 28 points contribution.
Initially, the Storm held a commanding 17-point advantage early in the third quarter, but the Dream, now holding a 5-2 record, showcased their resilience by scoring 14 of the next 20 points. Gray played a pivotal role by sinking a crucial 3-pointer to complete an 11-0 run, reducing the gap to 61-59 with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. Further asserting their comeback, Gray netted 2 out of 3 free throws, securing Atlanta’s first lead since early in the game, and followed with another 3-pointer to extend the lead to 75-70 within the fourth quarter.
Howard and Gray, who had a muted first half with Gray scoring just seven points on 2-of-6 shooting, unleashed their prowess in the second half by collectively amassing 40 points. Brionna Jones added notable support with 15 points, while Naz Hillmon contributed 11 points and hauled in six rebounds, five of which were offensive.
In a tense moment, Skylar Diggins of Seattle narrowed the Dream’s lead to 82-80 after sinking a pull-up jumper with 3:12 left in the game. However, Gray quickly responded with two points from free throws, and Howard added six more points by the end, ensuring Atlanta’s triumph.
For the Storm, now 3-3 for the season, Diggins led her team with 20 points, followed by Nneka Ogwumike contributing 16 points. Both Gabby Williams and Erica Wheeler scored 14 points each.
The Dream intensified their gameplay in the second half, outpacing the Storm 60-42, and achieving a field goal success rate of 21 out of 38. In the fourth quarter, the Dream capitalized on their opportunities at the line, making 8 of 11 free throws compared to Seattle’s perfect 4 of 4, amidst eight fouls against the Storm.
Looking ahead, the Dream will continue their road journey by facing Connecticut next Friday. Meanwhile, the Storm will remain home for their next game against Las Vegas on Sunday, part of their three-game home stretch.
