MIAMI — The San Francisco Giants secured a 2-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday night thanks to contributions from Matt Chapman and Kyle Harrison. This win halted a three-game losing streak for the Giants.
Taking the spotlight, Harrison threw five scoreless innings in what was only his second start as part of the rotation. This change came about as Justin Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award holder, is sidelined due to a strained right pectoral muscle. Harrison effectively contained the Marlins, preventing a hit until Eric Wagaman singled at the start of the fourth inning. The left-arm pitcher then regained control, issuing three walks and striking out five batters.
The Giants’ bullpen continued Harrison’s strong efforts, collectively allowing just two hits to Miami in the closing innings. Camilo Doval stepped in to secure the last four outs, earning his sixth save.
Chapman was instrumental in expanding the lead to 2-0, launching a towering home run off Marlins starter Cal Quantrill that traveled 420 feet to left field in the fourth inning. This homer put Chapman level with teammates Heliot Ramos and Wilmer Flores, all sharing the team lead with ten home runs.
After allowing the solo blast, Quantrill concluded his pitching stint with performance marks, striking out seven over his five innings. He allowed a total of eight hits and issued one walk.
The scoring started in the first inning when Flores’ single batted in Ramos, who had earlier tripled, taking place after an intense 11-pitch showdown.
The entirety of Miami’s offense was contained to just three hits, including a double by Connor Norby in the seventh and a single from pinch-hitter Jesús Sánchez in the eighth. Despite several opportunities, the Marlins failed to capitalize, leaving nine runners stranded and failing to produce a hit with runners in scoring positions across eight attempts.
A key turning point arrived in the eighth inning after Sánchez hit a leadoff single, advancing when Otto Lopez was hit by a pitch. With two outs and the game in balance, Doval retired Norby on a flyout to eliminate the threat and preserve the lead.
In a pertinent statistic, the Giants have endured 12 consecutive games without scoring more than four runs.
Looking ahead, the Giants’ Robbie Ray, boasting a 7-0 record with a 2.56 ERA, is scheduled to pitch in the upcoming second game of the series. He will face off against the Marlins’ Edward Cabrera, who holds a 1-1 record with a 4.73 ERA.
