MARENGO, Ohio — A tragic event unfolded in Ohio when a sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence incident. The unfortunate event took place in Marengo, around 35 miles north of the state capital, Columbus.

In a briefing with the media, Sheriff John Hinton solemnly announced that Deputy Daniel Sherrer, aged 31, died as a result of the altercation. Sherrer had been an integral member of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Department since joining in March 2021, known for his positive demeanor and dedication to service.

Sheriff Hinton reminisced about Sherrer’s consistently upbeat nature, mentioning that he “always had a smile on his face” and rarely seemed to have a bad day. While the incident heavily impacted the department, Hinton emphasized the team’s resolve to continue their duties, stating it was in honor of what Sherrer would have wanted.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, events escalated rapidly after Deputy Sherrer arrived at the scene, resulting in him sustaining a gunshot wound. Both the deputy and the assailant were transported to a medical facility where Sherrer succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Sheriff Hinton shared that he hadn’t reviewed the body camera footage at the time of his address, thus refraining from elaborating further on the confrontation’s specifics. The suspect involved remains in serious condition at the hospital, and Sheriff Hinton expressed his disdain, choosing to withhold the suspect’s identity from the public discourse.

“You’re never going to hear his name come from my lips,” Hinton asserted to the press, underscoring his refusal to amplify the suspect’s identity. “Why would I? He doesn’t deserve it.”

The investigation into the shooting is now under the jurisdiction of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, supported by the expertise of the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
