MARENGO, Ohio โ€” A tragic event unfolded in Ohio when a sheriffโ€™s deputy was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence incident. The unfortunate event took place in Marengo, around 35 miles north of the state capital, Columbus.

In a briefing with the media, Sheriff John Hinton solemnly announced that Deputy Daniel Sherrer, aged 31, died as a result of the altercation. Sherrer had been an integral member of the Morrow County Sheriffโ€™s Department since joining in March 2021, known for his positive demeanor and dedication to service.

Sheriff Hinton reminisced about Sherrerโ€™s consistently upbeat nature, mentioning that he โ€œalways had a smile on his faceโ€ and rarely seemed to have a bad day. While the incident heavily impacted the department, Hinton emphasized the teamโ€™s resolve to continue their duties, stating it was in honor of what Sherrer would have wanted.

According to a post on the departmentโ€™s Facebook page, events escalated rapidly after Deputy Sherrer arrived at the scene, resulting in him sustaining a gunshot wound. Both the deputy and the assailant were transported to a medical facility where Sherrer succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Sheriff Hinton shared that he hadnโ€™t reviewed the body camera footage at the time of his address, thus refraining from elaborating further on the confrontationโ€™s specifics. The suspect involved remains in serious condition at the hospital, and Sheriff Hinton expressed his disdain, choosing to withhold the suspectโ€™s identity from the public discourse.

โ€œYouโ€™re never going to hear his name come from my lips,โ€ Hinton asserted to the press, underscoring his refusal to amplify the suspectโ€™s identity. โ€œWhy would I? He doesnโ€™t deserve it.โ€

The investigation into the shooting is now under the jurisdiction of the Delaware County Sheriffโ€™s Office, supported by the expertise of the stateโ€™s Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
