SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — In a startling event on Tuesday morning, a fierce fire wreaked havoc on one of Rhode Island’s iconic dining spots. Firefighters responded to an emergency call at 3:45 a.m., discovering thick smoke and roaring flames enveloping the Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingstown.

The cause behind the blaze remains a mystery as the state fire marshal undertakes a thorough investigation. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Steve Pinch from Union Fire District highlighted the situation, stating, “While the building still stands, it suffered significant internal damage from water, smoke, and fire.” He added that most of the property’s infrastructure would likely require replacement.

The Matunuck Oyster Bar, renowned for its authentic dining experience, has been a staple on the Rhode Island waterfront since its inception in 2009. With its ‘pond-to-table’ philosophy, the restaurant sources directly from its seven-acre aquaculture operation on a local salt pond, established in 2002. Known not just for dining, the spot also offers public tours of its oyster farm.

The establishment’s standout menu item, the littlenecks and chourico dish, earned it a spot among the “Best Dishes” of the year in 2023. It was also celebrated by being included in USA Today’s “Restaurants of the Year” list in 2024, underlining its esteemed status.

“This restaurant has been essential for many since it opened,” expressed Pinch. “It’s heartbreaking for all the employees and the owner, who have poured effort into building this business, to witness such devastation occur so rapidly.”

This distressing event transpired on the cusp of the Memorial Day weekend, typically the start of a bustling season for New England’s coastal enterprises.

U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, representing Rhode Island, conveyed his relief over the lack of injuries and praised the swift action of first responders. “I’m grateful there were no injuries and thankful for their quick response at a cherished local institution,” he stated in a reassuring note.
