DETROIT โ The Detroit Tigers put on a commanding performance against the Boston Red Sox, securing a decisive 14-2 victory on Monday night. Key to the Tigersโ victory was Gleyber Torres, who not only hit a home run but also drove in three runs throughout the game.
Adding to the offensive barrage, Trey Sweeney also contributed with a home run, while Kerry Carpenter made his mark by scoring three times within the first three innings. This win kept Detroit at the top of their division, boasting a record of 27-15.
On the mound, Jackson Jobe impressed with his resilience, allowing only one run during his 5 2/3 innings performance. He conceded three hits, struck out seven, and issued five walks in the process.
Boston did find some life through home runs from Wilyer Abreu and Abraham Toro, yet it wasnโt enough to match Detroitโs early surge. Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck struggled significantly, giving up 11 runs over 2 1/3 innings. This marked his second start this season in which he has allowed 11 earned runs, a dubious achievement for a Boston pitcher.
The Tigers jumped to an early lead when Torres homered for two runs in the first inning. The offense didnโt stop there, as Detroit erupted with a massive nine-run third inning. Highlights included Riley Greeneโs two-run single and Sweeneyโs three-run homer. During this inning alone, Houck faced 11 batters but managed only one out before being replaced by Sean Newcomb.
Jobe found himself in a tight spot in the third, walking Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman to fill the bases. Despite solid hits from Kristian Campbell and Abreu, Carpenterโs quick reaction caught Campbellโs liner, while Torres skillfully handled Abreuโs ground ball. This allowed the Tigers to escape the inning unscathed.
In a historic comparison, the Tigers last scored 11 runs in the opening three innings back on September 8, 2008, during their 14-8 triumph over the Oakland Athletics.
The series between Boston and Detroit continues with the next game set for Tuesday. While Boston will send RHP Brayan Bello to the mound, Detroit has yet to announce their starting pitcher.
