SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings have announced the appointment of Mike Woodson as an associate head coach under the leadership of Doug Christie. This move brings Woodson, an experienced figure in both the NBA and collegiate circuits, back into the professional basketball realm. Over the past four years, Woodson served as the head coach for Indiana, his alma mater.
With a substantial background in the NBA, where he played for 11 seasons and spent five of those with the Kings, Woodson then transitioned into coaching. His career spans from 1996 to 2021, encompassing roles as both an assistant and a head coach before his recent stint in college basketball.
Woodson was part of the Detroit Pistons’ coaching team when they secured the NBA title in 2004. He has nine seasons of head coaching experience, clinching playoff appearances on three occasions with the Atlanta Hawks over six seasons and twice with the New York Knicks during a three-year tenure. His NBA head coaching record stands at 315-365.
Doug Christie, who took on the interim head coaching role for the Kings last season, steered the team to a 27-25 record after taking over in December following Mike Brown’s departure. Although the Kings fell in the Play-In Tournament, their efforts proved substantial under Christie’s guidance. Recently, new general manager Scott Perry made the decision to secure Christie as the Kings’ full-time head coach.
