NYON, Switzerland – UEFA has chosen István Kovács to referee the prestigious Champions League final, the organization announced on Monday, marking an impressive milestone for the Romanian official in European competitions.

Kovács is set to oversee the match between Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, which will take place on May 31 in Munich. This appointment adds to his distinguished career, as he already managed one of this season’s notable Champions League fixtures — PSG’s narrow 1-0 win over Liverpool in the round of 16 second leg, which was decided by a penalty shootout in favor of the French team.

The upcoming final signifies a remarkable achievement for Kovács, completing his involvement in UEFA cup competition finals. Previously, he served as the referee for Atalanta’s triumph over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last year, as well as Roma’s victory against Feyenoord in the 2022 Europa Conference League final.

For the Champions League final, Kovács will be supported by an international team, including video review experts from the Netherlands, along with reserve officials hailing from Portugal. This collaboration is part of UEFA’s effort to ensure the high standards of officiating in its competitions.
