CAIRO — In a surprising turn of events, Orlando Pirates, a prominent South African soccer club, announced on Monday the departure of their Spanish coach, José Riveiro. He has been released ahead of his contract’s expiration amidst speculations of his imminent move to join Egypt’s Al Ahly, particularly as the team gears up for the Club World Cup in the United States.
This development adds excitement as Al Ahly is scheduled to face off against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the tournament’s opening match on June 14. Riveiro expressed his gratitude in a statement: “I want to express my sincere appreciation to Orlando Pirates for allowing me the opportunity to leave before the end of my contract,” marking the end of his tenure on the team’s official website.
Al Ahly, known for its dominant performance as four-time African champion in the past five seasons, has been searching for a full-time coach since Marcel Koller’s departure following their elimination from the CAF Champions League semifinals by Mamelodi Sundowns. Riveiro’s potential appointment is yet to be confirmed by Al Ahly, though it has been a topic of speculation in the Egyptian media.
The Pirates have noted that Riveiro will make his final appearance on the bench during their upcoming game on Tuesday. Club chairman Irvin Khoza stated, “Jose approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club.” Thus confirming the coach’s desire to move on prematurely after nearly three years with the club. Before this, Riveiro had built his career in Finland.
As Al Ahly prepares for the Club World Cup, they notably secured their spot as one of the 32 teams by clinching the African title in both 2021 and 2023, as well as in 2024. Following their match against Inter Miami at the Miami Dolphins’ stadium, Al Ahly is slated for two additional Group A games at the renowned MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they will face Palmeiras and Porto.
