CLEVELAND — In an impressive display of power, Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs, equaling Aaron Judge at the top of the major league table and lengthening his on-base streak to 46 consecutive games as the Philadelphia Phillies secured a 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday night.
Schwarber launched a solo home run off Luis Ortiz in the second inning and followed with a two-run homer against Tim Herrin in the eighth. These shots marked his 14th home run of the season and the 32nd time in his career that he has hit multiple homers in a game. His streak is the longest since Paul Goldschmidt’s 46-game on-base streak with St. Louis in 2022.
Zack Wheeler (4-1) demonstrated commanding pitching, allowing just two runners beyond first base over seven innings, striking out eight batters, and surrendering only three hits while issuing two walks. The right-hander matched his longest outing this season, contributing to the Phillies’ successful 5-1 road trip that included games against Tampa Bay and Cleveland.
José Alvarado took over in the eighth inning, and Jordan Romano finished the game, securing his third save as part of a combined three-hitter performance by the Phillies. Philadelphia has now won 11 of their last 14 games after briefly falling to a 50% win rate on April 25.
Luis Ortiz (2-4) went six innings on the mound for Cleveland, striking out nine Phillies and allowing four hits. Despite the loss, this defeat was only the Guardians’ 11th in their last 31 games since April 8.
The turning point occurred when Tim Herrin entered the game to pitch the eighth inning. Though the Phillies held a narrow 1-0 lead, he walked Bryson Stott but managed to dispatch the next two hitters before Schwarber connected on a 397-foot home run to center, extending Philadelphia’s lead.
Over his remarkable on-base streak, Schwarber has amassed 16 home runs, 37 RBIs, and 33 runs. This streak surprised everyone, beginning on September 23, 2024, against the Chicago Cubs after going hitless against the New York Mets the previous day.
Looking ahead, the Phillies will start a six-game homestand with Cristopher Sánchez (4-1, 2.89 ERA) facing the St. Louis Cardinals’ Matthew Liberatore (3-3, 3.07 ERA). Meanwhile, the Cleveland Guardians will begin a three-game series with Milwaukee, where RHP Ben Lively (2-2, 3.46 ERA) will oppose Freddy Peralta (4-2, 2.18 ERA).
