DENVER — In a notable performance on Sunday, Hunter Goodman powered the Colorado Rockies to a 9-3 triumph over the San Diego Padres, halting an eight-game losing streak. Goodman’s standout game included a double, a triple, a home run, and five RBIs.

Following the victory, the Rockies made a significant change, dismissing manager Bud Black. He departs having the most wins in team history, with a total of 544. This decision came after a crushing 21-0 defeat to the Padres just the day before. Warren Schaeffer, who served as the third base coach, has been appointed as the interim manager.

On the mound, Germán Márquez, who is now 1-6 for the season, delivered a strong performance, pitching seven innings while surrendering just one run on three hits.

Goodman’s stellar triple came against Nick Pivetta, driving in two runs before Mickey Moniak hit an RBI single, extending the Rockies’ lead to 6-1 in the third inning. Pivetta struggled, allowing six runs on seven hits with two walks over his four innings.

For the Padres, Fernando Tatis Jr. registered a run by scoring on a Manny Machado groundout in the first inning. Tatis later added another RBI with a groundout in the eighth, and Machado subsequently delivered a run-scoring single.

In the eighth inning, Ryan McMahon hit a solo home run for Colorado, further cementing their victory.

A decisive moment in the game came when Brenton Doyle started with a single, advancing to second as Jordan Beck was hit by a pitch. This set the stage for Goodman’s three-run homer, which gave the Rockies an early 3-1 lead.

Examining historical context, the Rockies’ current record represents the poorest 40-game start in Major League Baseball since the Baltimore Orioles’ 6-34 record at the start of the 1988 season.

Looking ahead, the Rockies will begin a three-game road series against the Texas Rangers with Chase Dollander, who currently holds a 2-3 record and a 7.71 ERA, scheduled to pitch on Monday. The Padres will host the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series, with Michael King, who boasts a 4-1 record and 2.22 ERA, taking on Yusei Kikuchi, who is winless at 0-4 with an ERA of 3.83.
