TORONTO — On Saturday, Toronto secured a much-needed victory with a 2-0 win against DC United, thanks to a goal from Lorenzo Insigne and an own goal by DC United’s Lucas Bartlett.
Toronto’s goalkeeper, Sean Johnson, was instrumental in maintaining a clean sheet, successfully saving five attempts from DC United. Despite having a robust 13 shots in the first half with five on target, Toronto couldn’t get past DC United’s goalkeeper, Luis Barraza, at that stage in the match.
The breakthrough came for Toronto early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Lorenzo Insigne made a decisive move, heading the ball from the center of the box into the bottom right corner of the net. Theo Corbeanu provided the assist, setting up the goal that put Toronto ahead.
Later, in the 66th minute, DC United’s Lucas Bartlett inadvertently sent the ball into his own net while attempting a sliding tackle in response to a pass from Insigne, cementing Toronto’s lead with an own goal.
For the match, Barraza, DC United’s goalkeeper, demonstrated resilience, finishing with a total of eight saves. Toronto’s triumph marks only their second win this season, moving them to a record of 2-6-4, accumulating a total of 10 points. Meanwhile, DC United fell to a record of 3-6-3, holding at 12 points.
Both Toronto and DC United were among the original ten founding clubs of Major League Soccer in 1996. Historically, DC United leads the head-to-head series with 18 wins, while Toronto has 13 victories and the teams have drawn 13 times.
This victory occurred during Toronto’s third match in a series of four consecutive home games in their MLS schedule. They will conclude this home stretch with a match against Cincinnati on Wednesday. DC United, on the other hand, will look to bounce back in their upcoming game against New York City, also set for Wednesday.
