WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Connor Hellebuyck delivered an impressive performance with 21 saves, leading the Winnipeg Jets to a decisive 4-0 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night in Game 2, evening the Western Conference second-round playoff series.
Hellebuyck, claiming his fourth career playoff shutout, helped the Jets bounce back after a 3-2 defeat on Wednesday night. The Jets, who topped the regular-season standings, displayed resilience and determination.
“There were times in the first round where I felt good about my game, even if the results weren’t there,” Hellebuyck remarked. “We’ve improved and we’re ready. The team is performing phenomenally in front of me, so it’s an exciting time. We’re just focusing on enjoying the journey.”
Early goals from Gabriel Vilardi and Nikolaj Ehlers set the tone, while Adam Lowry extended the lead to 3-0 midway through the second period. Ehlers sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 3:40 left, rounding out a three-point night.
The teams will meet again in Dallas for Game 3 scheduled on Sunday.
Hellebuyck’s performance was instrumental for the Jets’ victory.
“It’s typical of his contributions,” said Josh Morrissey, who assisted on Vilardi’s goal. “He’s an outstanding goaltender, and he often makes challenging saves seem routine. He was in top form tonight.”
Dallas coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged Hellebuyck’s excellence.
“He performed really well,” DeBoer stated. “We could have made things tougher for him, but he undoubtedly delivered a top-notch performance.”
Opposing goaltender Jake Oettinger made 21 saves for Dallas during the game.
Vilardi initiated the scoring on a power play at 3:35 in the first period after Tyler Seguin received a double-minor for high-sticking Morrissey just 17 seconds into the game. Vilardi capitalized on Ehlers’ rebound, neatly sending the puck into the net.
Ehlers extended the lead at 7:07, followed by Lowry’s goal with 8:58 left in the second.
“Of course, two wins would have been ideal, but we have to focus on the larger context,” Stars defenseman Cody Ceci said. “This series is long, and facing off against this strong team is just what we anticipated.”
