OMAHA, Neb. — Jamie Carey has been appointed as the new head coach for Omaha’s women’s basketball team, as announced by athletic director Adrian Dowell on Sunday. Carey steps into the role following the departure of Carrie Banks, who was let go last month after the team experienced five consecutive losing seasons. Omaha has not witnessed a winning season since the 2016-17 campaign.
Carey, aged 44, joins Omaha from UTSA where she served as the associate head coach under Karen Aston for four years. During her tenure with the Roadrunners, the team achieved notable success, clinching the American Athletic Conference regular-season title for the first time and finishing with an impressive 26-5 record in their last season. The team also competed in the WNIT in 2024 and participated in the WBIT in 2025.
Before her successful stint at UTSA, Carey gained valuable experience in coaching, having served on the coaching staff at North Texas for one season, at Texas for four years, and at Colorado for two. Additionally, she brought her expertise to the national level as the assistant women’s national team director for USA Basketball from 2010 to 2014.
As a player, Carey had an illustrious career between 2000 and 2005 at Stanford and Texas, which paved her way into professional basketball. She went on to play four seasons in the WNBA with the Connecticut Sun.
