In Houston, a violent incident at a large home party left 16 individuals shot and claimed the life of an 18-year-old man. Authorities from the Houston Police Department stated on Sunday evening that those wounded during the gunfire ranged in age from 16 to 40. The chaos broke out after an uninvited guest was asked to leave the gathering. While numerous people were initially detained for questioning, no arrests have been made as yet.
The police started receiving emergency calls reporting the shooting at about 12:50 a.m. in the southeastern part of Houston. According to Assistant Police Chief Patricia Cantu, officers arrived within minutes and heard shots ringing out. They discovered several wounded individuals scattered outside the residence.
According to Cantu, the trouble began at a family party when an uninvited individual was asked to leave the premises. This person reportedly opened fire, leading to others at the party responding in kind with their own weapons. Video footage from the scene indicated that outdoor party settings were in disarray, with overturned tables and chairs evident beneath a carport and a tent. Some tables remained with bottles of water and pieces of cake.
The Houston Fire Department was summoned to the scene and initially treated some of the wounded in the parking area of a nearby restaurant. Indeed, one individual was confirmed deceased, and several others were critically injured, undergoing surgery. Cantu mentioned that some victims made their way to hospitals independently.
“It’s still very complicated,” Cantu explained to the media, describing the initial moments as chaotic. As of Sunday evening, the police have withheld updates on the conditions of the injured and are not revealing the deceased’s identity until the family has been notified.
