CHICAGO — Jake Meyers showcased a stellar performance by hitting two home runs and achieving a personal best with seven RBIs, propelling the Houston Astros to an 8-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
Meyers, who was positioned last in the batting lineup, recorded four hits, marking his third career game with multiple home runs. Hunter Brown (5-1) contributed to the triumph by striking out nine batters over six innings, securing his fifth consecutive decision. Despite allowing three runs, all occurring in the first inning, Brown limited Chicago to four hits overall.
This win was a rebound for Houston, which had dropped two games in a row, including losing the first match of this three-game series on Friday. For Chicago, Andrew Vaughn managed two hits and two RBIs, but the team remains at the bottom of the standings. Fraser Ellard (0-2) took the pitching loss for Chicago.
White Sox pitcher Davis Martin conceded three runs and eight hits across five innings. Meyers launched his first home run of the season off Martin in the third inning. Later, he leveled the score at three apiece with a two-run triple after enduring a 10-pitch at-bat in the fourth inning.
In the sixth, Meyers nailed a decisive three-run homer against Penn Murfee, and he went on to double, sending Zach Dezenzo home, contributing to a two-run eighth inning. The Astros managed this victory without their slugger, Yordan Alvarez, who was absent due to right-hand inflammation.
Brown has demonstrated impressive form, winning five out of six starts since a loss to the Mets in March.
During the first inning, Chicago initially gained the lead as Andrew Benintendi drove in Chase Meidroth, followed by Vaughn’s two-run single.
A significant moment occurred in the sixth when, with two players on base and two outs, Meyers faced Murfee and sent his second pitch, a sweeper, flying 409 feet to left field.
Before this game, Meyers had notched no home runs and only six RBIs in 30 games and 84 at-bats this season.
Looking ahead, Houston’s Lance McCullers Jr. is set to make his first major league appearance since the 2022 World Series. He will be pitching against Chicago’s Bryse Wilson (0-1, 5.00 ERA) on Sunday.
