In a recent development in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, an Olympic track star faces charges following an altercation with a fellow Olympian. According to reports from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Fred Kerley, aged 29, has been accused of assaulting Alaysha Johnson, also an Olympian, during an incident that took place at a local hotel. Allegedly, Kerley struck Johnson with a closed fist, resulting in her sustaining a bloody nose. Kerley is currently facing a misdemeanor battery charge.

Fred Kerley is renowned for his accomplishments on the track, having secured a silver medal in the 100-meter race at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Alaysha Johnson also participated in these prestigious events. The report indicates that Kerley and Johnson have a history, leading to a heated argument at the Fort Lauderdale hotel where the altercation occurred. This incident transpired as they were preparing for a track meet in the area.

Richard Cooper, Kerley’s legal representative, released a statement via email, suggesting that Kerley is being targeted due to his prominence, resulting in baseless accusations by “fierce and sometimes jealous competitors.” Cooper emphasized, “We urge the public not to jump to conclusions as more details emerge. Fred is eager to resume his focus on competing, steering clear of distractions, while his legal team works diligently to clear his name.”

This recent arrest adds to Kerley’s legal challenges. Earlier this year, he encountered legal issues when he was detained for allegedly assaulting a Miami Beach police officer on January 2nd, an incident escalated by the use of a Taser. Additionally, in May, he faced charges of domestic battery involving his wife, as per court documents. Kerley’s legal team maintains that he is innocent of these allegations as well.
