PARIS — Investigators specializing in combating organized crime are delving into a series of recent assaults on French prisons and their personnel, potentially linked to a notorious drug syndicate, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. A news conference on Saturday shed light on the investigation, suggesting the involvement of the infamous DZ Mafia, believed to be a dominant drug trafficking faction operating out of Marseille. This southern port city has long been a hotbed for narcotics and the illicit activities intertwined with the trade.

The examination is focusing on claims from a key suspect linked to last month’s orchestrated attacks on prison facilities, who alleges connections with the DZ Mafia. Authorities are evaluating the authenticity and scope of the Mafia’s influence in the incidents, which included multiple attacks involving gunfire and arson. Various prison facilities and the residences of staff members, along with vehicles at a prison service institution, were targeted in the Paris region and other areas.

One striking detail from these incidents was the appearance of the graffiti “DDPF” on several of the targets, purportedly standing for “défense des prisonniers français” or “defense of French prisoners.” This might hint at an underlying motive or message behind the assaults. As of now, 21 individuals suspected of participation have been apprehended and are facing preliminary charges, including attempted murder among other serious offenses.

In response to rising concerns over increased cocaine consumption and the violence linked to drug trafficking in France, law enforcement authorities have intensified their crackdown on such illegal operations. The situation underscores a broader trend of escalating drug-related violence in the country.
