ST. LOUIS — The New York Mets have decided to call up promising pitcher Blade Tidwell for his first major league start this coming Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals. This decision, announced by Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, is part of a strategy to give the team’s primary pitchers some relief during a demanding stretch of 13 consecutive game days.

Tidwell, a pitcher who caught the Mets’ eye as a second-round draft pick in 2022, has shown significant potential. “He earned it,” said Mendoza. “We’ve seen glimpses of his abilities during spring training, and his recent performances have been particularly impressive.”

As of Friday, the Mets’ starting pitchers had an impressive streak of allowing four runs or fewer in 32 consecutive games, marking the longest such streak at the beginning of a National League season in 125 years. With a commanding team ERA of 2.68 and leading the league with 303 strikeouts, New York’s pitching staff has been formidable.

To manage workloads, the Mets have previously opted for bullpen games, having Huascar Brazoban start on two occasions last month, including during the recent rotation. Tidwell’s start will enable him to stick to his usual pregame preparations.

The 23-year-old right-hander Tidwell has been honing his skills with Triple-A Syracuse, where he holds a 1-2 record and a 5.00 ERA over six starts this season, striking out 37 batters in 27 innings pitched. “While his balls in play may be a little high there, it really comes down to execution — throwing strikes,” Mendoza noted. “His arm is electric, and we’re excited for him to have this chance.”

In addition to promoting Tidwell, the Mets executed another roster change on Friday. They recalled right-handed pitcher Austin Warren from Triple-A Syracuse, while fellow right-hander Ty Adcock was sent down after making only one appearance.
