The iconic rock band R.E.M. has announced a unique rerelease of their debut single, “Radio Free Europe,” with all proceeds benefiting the real-life broadcaster, Radio Free Europe.

This media organization, part of the U.S. government-funded services, strives to provide news globally. However, in recent times, the Trump administration has attacked it, labeling these broadcasters as expensive and left-leaning, therefore seeking to cut their financial support.

In a recent development, a federal judge has mandated that the administration restore a $12 million funding cut, previously approved by Congress, to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Legal representatives for the broadcaster, with a history spanning 75 years, have voiced concerns it may shut down by June without these funds.

R.E.M.’s frontman, Michael Stipe, captures this sentiment in the song’s opening line, “Decide yourself if radio’s gonna stay,” underlining the significance of uncensored information. Stipe emphasized on World Press Freedom Day the critical role that freedom of music and press play, cautioning that censorship breeds untruths. He commended the courageous journalists at Radio Free Europe for their persistent efforts.

Stephen Capus, president of RFE/RL, expressed his admiration for R.E.M., acknowledging their music as an emblem of freedom. His organization’s aim is to inspire and promote freedom, resonating with audiences who may not always experience it firsthand.

The single “Radio Free Europe” first emerged from Athens, Georgia, on a small independent label, marking R.E.M.’s entrance into the music world and eventually earning them a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Although the band disbanded in 2011, the song was enshrined into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, recognizing its influence on independent rock music at the time.

This special rerelease, an EP of five songs, will offer fans the original track alongside a new remix by frequent collaborator Jacknife Lee. Three additional songs from the original session will also be included: the B-side “Sitting Still”; an instrumental titled “Wh. Tornado”; and a never-before-heard remix called “Radio Free Dub.”

Mitch Easter, who produced the original recording, is overseeing this rerelease. Available for streaming now, fans can also purchase a distinctive vinyl edition through select independent record stores and R.E.M.’s online store, with all proceeds directed to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
