THESSALONIKI, Greece — A man faced charges in court on Friday, accused of espionage after he was caught allegedly capturing photos and videos of military activities at the strategic Alexandroupolis port located in northeastern Greece. This port plays a vital role as a logistics center for U.S. and NATO operations, aiding the transport of military supplies and personnel in support of Ukraine and NATO allies in Eastern Europe.

The suspect’s arrest was made earlier in the week through coordinated efforts by the police and Greece’s National Intelligence Service. Authorities stated that he was “working for another individual” and transferred the footage to this person via an encrypted messaging application, although they did not disclose further details.

According to reports from state television, citing law enforcement officials in Greece, the individual is a 59-year-old Greek national who was born in Georgia. Investigations are ongoing to determine if there is any connection to Russian intelligence agencies, potentially through a contact based in Lithuania.

On Friday, the suspect was brought to a magistrate in Alexandroupolis, escorted by police officers, for a preliminary hearing as part of the judicial inquiry that continues to unfold.
