DOHA, Qatar — On Thursday, Qatar announced the appointment of Julen Lopetegui, a former Real Madrid and Spain manager, as the new head coach of its national football team. The 58-year-old has agreed to lead the team until the Asia Cup in 2027, as Qatar aims for a third consecutive championship.

Qatar’s football enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting Lopetegui’s first game against Iran on June 5, followed by another match in Uzbekistan only five days later. Expressing their enthusiasm, the Qatar Football Association (QFA) welcomed him on social media, noting, “Ready for a new chapter. Welcome Lopetegui. We’re excited to embark on this journey together.”

Lopetegui succeeds another Spanish coach, Luis Garcia, who had assumed the role only in December. On the same day of Lopetegui’s appointment, the QFA announced Garcia’s exit, expressing gratitude for his efforts. “The QFA extends its deepest appreciation to Mr Garcia for his professionalism and dedication throughout his time with the team,” they acknowledged on social platforms.

Qatar’s football team has faced challenges recently, struggling in their World Cup qualifying matches. Currently, the team is in fourth place in Asia Group A, which eliminates them from automatically reaching the 2026 World Cup. However, there remains a possibility for the 2022 host nation to secure a spot through playoff rounds.

In his recent career arcs, Lopetegui worked with two Premier League teams, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham, until his previous contract ended in January. The Qatar national team now looks forward to his experienced guidance to steer them toward future accomplishments.
