SAN DIEGO — In a thrilling matchup, Elias Díaz powered the San Diego Padres to a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. With this win, the Padres completed a two-game sweep and moved ahead of the Giants in the competitive NL West, trailing only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Díaz opened the scoring with a decisive home run to left field off Giants pitcher Landen Roupp, bringing the score to 2-0 in the third inning. The ball was initially caught by a fan sporting a Giants T-shirt, but after a thorough video review, officials ruled it free of fan interference. It marked Díaz’s second homer of the season.

Fernando Tatis Jr. significantly contributed with three hits, including singles, and crossed the plate thanks to Manny Machado’s single in a productive two-run fifth inning. Adding to the Padres’ efforts, Jose Iglesias managed an infield single that brought home Luis Arraez. Returning from a concussion, Arraez marked his presence with a triple in the sixth inning, allowing Díaz to score.

On the mound, Michael King demonstrated prowess by limiting the Giants to just one run and three hits over 5 2/3 innings, notching six strikeouts along the way. Robert Suarez took the mound in the ninth and secured his 12th save of the season, leading the league.

Despite late-game surges with homers from Heliot Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski, the Giants fell short. A pivotal moment occurred when Machado, stationed at third base, made a dynamic dive to snag a one-hop hit from Willy Adames. Even while on his back, he managed an impressive throw to second base, forcing out Yastrzemski.

In contrast, San Francisco’s Matt Chapman faced challenges at the plate, striking out three times, continuing a recent streak of multi-strikeout games in the series.

Looking ahead, the Giants’ Justin Verlander, yet winless with a 0-2 record and a 4.99 ERA, is slated to start against the Colorado Rockies. Meanwhile, the Padres have Dylan Cease gearing up for Friday’s series opener against Pittsburgh.
