NEW YORK — Francisco Lindor and Starling Marte ignited the New York Mets’ offense with two-run homers early in the game, leading to an impressive 8-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mets’ defense shined spectacularly throughout the night, showcasing their skills and helping to secure this win.

Pete Alonso added to the scoring frenzy by launching a home run off Arizona’s Eduardo Rodriguez, whose performance was subpar as he fell to a 1-3 record. The Mets’ triumph elevated them to a commendable 21-9, currently the best record in Major League Baseball. They have been dominant on home turf, holding a 13-1 record at Citi Field – marking the franchise’s best-ever start at home.

David Peterson, given a comfortable 7-0 lead by the third inning, pitched five innings, yielding just one run. His efforts contributed to handing the Diamondbacks their fifth loss over the past six games. The Mets’ defensive lineup was formidable, with standout plays from Tyrone Taylor in center field, Lindor at shortstop, and Alonso at first base.

Taylor was impactful on offense as well, delivering an RBI double in the second inning and an RBI single in the third. Luisangel Acuña also played a crucial role, securing two singles, a stolen base, and crossing the plate twice.

A moment of concern came when Mets outfielder Juan Soto had a hard landing on his right shoulder during a diving attempt for Jorge Barrosa’s run-scoring double in the fifth inning. Despite the setback, Soto, under quick assessment by an athletic trainer, continued in the game.

Rodriguez’s outing saw him give up eight runs on nine hits over four innings, marking the highest number of runs he’s allowed since a rough 2016 outing. Notably, he surrendered three home runs, bucking his recent trend of avoiding homers altogether during road starts.

Looking ahead, Arizona will turn to newcomer Corbin Burnes to start the next game of the series in pursuit of his first win since signing a substantial $210 million contract as a free agent. Meanwhile, New York is expected to call upon Brandon Waddell from Triple-A Syracuse for his Mets debut, in place of giving regular starter Kodai Senga an extra day of rest.
