LOS ANGELES — Alijah Arenas is on the path to recovery following a dramatic car crash. The Southern California basketball recruit, only 18 years of age and son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, is set for release from the hospital soon, having sustained no major injuries.

Arenas was removed from an induced coma last Friday after the incident occurred in the Reseda neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley. The accident took place a day prior, involving the vehicle he was driving.

Josiah Johnson, who hosts a podcast with the elder Arenas, provided an update on Monday, stating, “Alijah is doing much better. Just got off the phone with Gil. … Alijah’s doing better, walking, talking, progressing very well, should be released from the hospital very soon. No major injuries as a result of the car accident.”

The crash happened while Arenas was on his way home from a gym session. Driving a Tesla Cybertruck, he reportedly “lost control,” leading to the incident. The Los Angeles Fire Department indicated that the vehicle hit a tree and possibly a fire hydrant. Los Angeles police were called to the scene shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday.

As of now, the precise cause of the crash has not been provided by the authorities.

Arenas, who plays at Chatsworth High, committed to the University of Southern California Trojans back in January. He has already made a name for himself by becoming the first male basketball player in the area to achieve 3,000 career points.
