BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Boca Juniors, one of Argentina’s most storied soccer clubs, announced on Tuesday that they have parted ways with their head coach, Fernando Gago. The decision came shortly after the team suffered a significant defeat against their fierce city rivals, River Plate, over the weekend.

Mauricio Serna, who is part of Boca Juniors’ Football Council, confirmed Gago’s exit following the 2-1 loss in the famed Argentine clasico that took place on Sunday. “We are in a position where decisions must be made, and as of late last night, we recognized that there’s no longer a pathway for him to continue as our coach,” Serna stated. He expressed gratitude for Gago’s dedication but acknowledged that recent circumstances necessitated this tough conclusion.

The defeat to River Plate marked a low point for Boca Juniors, who had also faced an early exit from the Copa Libertadores, having been knocked out by Peruvian team Alianza Lima. This elimination was especially notable as it was the first time in the club’s history that they were ousted from the competition by a team from Peru.

Gago, who had played for Real Madrid during his talented career, took charge of Boca Juniors last October. He had previously resigned from his position at Mexico’s Chivas midway through the season to step in as a replacement for Diego Martínez. Over the course of his tenure, Gago managed the team in 30 matches, registering 17 wins, five draws, and eight losses.
