SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have placed their All-Star pitcher Logan Gilbert on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow flexor strain. This decision comes after Gilbert’s early exit in a game against Miami, where he left after pitching only three innings and throwing 29 pitches. The sudden change has prompted adjustments within the team’s lineup and strategy.

At 27, Gilbert has shown impressive performance this season, recording a 1-1 win-loss record with a stellar 2.37 earned run average (ERA) over six starts. He has managed to strike out 44 batters while issuing just six walks in a span of 30 1/3 innings. However, the current injury poses a challenge for both him and the Mariners as they navigate the remainder of the season.

In response to Gilbert’s injury, Seattle has made roster adjustments, recalling left-hander Tayler Saucedo and right-hander Troy Taylor from Triple-A Tacoma. Additionally, the team made a tough call by designating right-hander Casey Lawrence for assignment, a move that often precedes a trade, release, or a demotion to the minors if he remains unclaimed.

Logan Gilbert’s presence has been key for the Mariners, especially considering his performance last season where he secured sixth place in the AL Cy Young Award voting. He concluded that season with a 9-12 record and a solid 3.23 ERA. Demonstrating consistency, Gilbert has made at least 32 starts annually for the last three seasons, amassing a record of 42-31 with a commendable 3.55 ERA throughout his five-year tenure in the major leagues.

As part of the adjustments to their pitching lineup, right-hander Logan Evans has been added to the Mariners’ taxi squad, ensuring readiness in case additional player support is necessary. The Mariners will need to lean on their depth and resilience during Gilbert’s absence to continue striving for success this season.
