EAGAN, Minn. — In a strategic move during this year’s NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings successfully negotiated a trade with the Seattle Seahawks to secure quarterback Sam Howell. The exchange involved swapping fifth-round picks, with the Vikings moving their 142nd overall selection for Seattle’s 172nd pick. This deal provides the Vikings with a young backup quarterback for J.J. McCarthy who also brings valuable starting experience to the team.
Howell showcased his abilities in 2023 by amassing 3,946 passing yards while starting each game for the Washington Commanders. Despite his performance, he also led the league that season with 21 interceptions and endured 65 sacks for a team that finished with a 4-13 record. However, at just 24 years old, Howell is expected to thrive under the Vikings’ quarterback-friendly system, which is spearheaded by head coach Kevin O’Connell.
O’Connell has a track record of enhancing quarterback performance, having previously aided Sam Darnold to achieve a Pro Bowl season in 2024 before Darnold transitioned to the Seahawks. This season, the Vikings place their confidence in McCarthy, who was selected 10th overall in the draft last year. Although McCarthy did not play during his rookie season due to a knee injury, he now has an opportunity to lead the team. Currently, the only other backup quarterback on the Vikings’ roster is Brett Rypien, who has accumulated four starts over six NFL seasons.
This trade positions the Vikings well as they continue to develop a robust and dynamic offensive lineup, aiming to capitalize on their fresh talent for the upcoming season.
