MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have bolstered their infield by acquiring Kody Clemens from the Philadelphia Phillies.
At 28, Clemens brings a notable lineage as the son of Roger Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award recipient. Previously designated for assignment by Philadelphia, Clemens joins the Twins following the injury of rookie infielder Luke Keaschall, who suffered a forearm break during a match against the Angels.
Clemens is anticipated to serve as a versatile backup, primarily at first and second base. He also has experience playing at third base and both corner outfield positions, providing the Twins with valuable flexibility. As Twins manager Rocco Baldelli noted, “We plan to utilize his ability to cover various positions, which he has demonstrated with other teams in the past.”
Clemens’s career included playing 56 games with the Detroit Tigers in 2022 before his tenure with the Phillies. His contributions this season were minimal, as limited playing time left him hitless over six at-bats.
Reflecting on his experience with limited game time, Clemens expressed optimism about his new opportunity with Minnesota, stating, “I enjoyed a productive spring but saw little playing time afterwards. I understand the decisions based on roster dynamics, and I’m eager to contribute to the Twins.”
Rob Thomson, the Phillies’ manager, reached out to Clemens, expressing regret over not being able to provide more opportunities. Thomson remarked, “Kody is league-caliber, and though circumstances did not favor him here, his skill and character make him an asset. He’s a great player and an outstanding person.”
Over his career, Clemens has maintained a .197 batting average, an OPS of .611, and has hit 14 home runs across 402 plate appearances.
