NEW YORK – The eagerly awaited matchup between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees scheduled for Saturday has been deferred due to persistent rain and adverse weather forecasts. The decision to postpone the game was taken approximately three and a half hours ahead of the initially planned first pitch, with a rescheduling set as a doubleheader on Sunday.

The upcoming doubleheader will begin with Max Fried facing Toronto’s Kevin Gausman in the first game. Following that, the second game will feature the originally scheduled pitchers, Clarke Schmidt for the Yankees and Chris Bassitt for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays recently halted a five-game losing streak, securing a 4-2 triumph on Friday after mounting a late-game comeback. This was highlighted by scoring three runs in the ninth inning against Devin Williams, who has been struggling as a closer. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contributed with a home run, and Alejandro Kirk delivered a game-changing two-run double against Williams. The Blue Jays managed a total of nine hits in the game, a remarkable improvement after a 9-for-90 slump in their previous series against Houston.

Devin Williams faced difficulties on the mound, failing to secure an out and blowing his first save in five opportunities this season. His performance this year has been rocky, carrying an 11.25 ERA over 10 appearances, while hitters are posting a .285 average against his changeup.

In the aftermath, Yankees manager Aaron Boone remained uncertain about potential changes involving Luke Weaver stepping in for Williams. Boone indicated the team would deliberate on their options. “We’ll kind of talk through that stuff,” Boone remarked. “This is raw right now. We want to do everything we can to get (Williams) right because we know how good he is and how valuable he’s going to be for us.”

These developments set the stage for an intriguing doubleheader on Sunday, where teams will not only battle the elements but also strategic considerations both on the mound and at the plate.
