SUTTON, Mass. — Tragedy struck at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation as a Topsfield woman lost her life in a fall while hiking with her children. Carolyn Sanger was traversing the area with her family when she plunged from the edge of a cliff, according to Sutton Police Department reports on Wednesday. The devastating fall measured approximately 50 to 75 feet (15 to 23 meters) into the chasm, police specified through their social media updates.

In a fortunate twist, medical practitioners were present and quickly attended to Sanger. Despite their rapid intervention, Sanger succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. The police have launched an investigation into the occurrence, which they currently categorize as an accidental fall.

Sanger, aged 49, was on the hike accompanied by three of her four children alongside additional family members. While Purgatory Chasm is known for its picturesque trails, caution is advised as the chasm trail itself is generally off-limits in winter due to treacherous, slippery surfaces, per details provided by the state authorities online. On the day of the incident, however, the weather conditions were reportedly dry.

Experienced hiker Andy Spears disclosed to WCVB-TV that trails meandering above the chasm harbor risky overhangs, posing danger for those venturing too close to the ledge for a view.
