MINNEAPOLIS — Royce Lewis, the Minnesota Twins’ third baseman, is set to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment starting Friday with the team’s Triple-A affiliate in St. Paul.
Lewis has been sidelined since suffering a moderate hamstring strain while sprinting to first base during a spring training game on March 16.
The Twins had anticipated Lewis playing a pivotal role at third base and contributing significantly to the heart of their batting lineup this season. However, his history of injuries has posed ongoing concerns. Over the past four years, Lewis has endured stints on the injured list due to a torn ACL, a strained oblique, and strained quadriceps.
In the 2023 season, Lewis showcased his potential by hitting .309 and connecting for 15 home runs. Unfortunately, his performance dipped after the All-Star break, with his batting average falling to .207 alongside just six home runs.
In related team news, the Twins have placed utility player Willi Castro on the 10-day injured list due to a strained oblique. To fill the gap in the roster, infielder Mickey Gasper has been called up from St. Paul.
