WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The governing body of cricket in New Zealand is set to make a significant investment in the growing sport of cricket in the United States, by joining the Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise beginning 2027. The move marks a strategic collaboration between New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and True North Sports Ventures, a company based in the United States, with plans to establish a new team either in Toronto or Atlanta. This initiative is the first of its kind, as it involves an agreement between an International Cricket Council full member nation and a major professional cricket league franchise.

Traditionally, the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) has attracted international players from around the globe, including from New Zealand, but IPL teams remain independent in ownership. Unlike this setup, New Zealand Cricket will be directly involved in the MLC team by providing both financial and operational backing. The initiative will include administrative support, strategic guidance, and personnel such as coaching and management staff.

The Chief Executive of New Zealand Cricket, Scott Weenink, mentioned that although their financial stake is minority, the venture holds promising prospects. Weenink highlighted the potential for growth in capital returns along with dividends derived from the equity investment. “Despite our focus on growing New Zealand’s cricket presence in India, we recognize substantial sports market opportunities in America,” added Weenink. This is especially relevant with the recent popularity boost cricket has experienced in the U.S. after co-hosting the T20 Cricket World Cup and gearing up for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Weenink elaborated that New Zealand Cricket aims to capitalize on the rising interest in cricket within the U.S. by leveraging the substantial growth potential that Major League Cricket offers. As global franchise cricket continues to expand, it necessitates strategic adaptations to sustain New Zealand’s cricket framework. The collaboration aims to broaden revenue avenues, expand global reach, and develop promising talent pathways for players and coaches alike.

Several prominent New Zealand cricketers have already participated in the MLC, and NZC expects this partnership with the U.S. league to pave the way for upcoming players across the spectrum of experience. The 2025 MLC season offers enticing prospects for players as it is scheduled within a month in June, enabling earnings up to $200,000 for elite athletes. The compact schedule enhances its appeal as a financially lucrative and attractive prospect.
